Craniosacral Therapy

Simon Copp

Hello, I’m Simon, Eleanor’s husband. I am a Craniosacral Therapist, father of four, trumpet player and Radiographer.

On this page I am going to limit myself  to describing my work as a Craniosacral Therapist.

So what does a Craniosacral Therapist do?

A Craniosacral Therapist works with the Craniosacral system to restore, enhance or enable a greater sense of wellbeing, health and vitality. It is effective in the treatment of both chronic and acute conditions, and because of its unique approach and system of work, it is suitable for treating babies through to those with mature and ageing bodies. The treatment itself is extremely gentle and non-manipulative. It works with the body’s own organising systems and principles, and most importantly – the body’s own Intelligence, in order to  bring about positive and long-lasting changes. There is no sense of forcing or implementing changes, just a sense of coaxing or inviting the body and mind to return to a more useful system of working.

A session is usually conducted with the client lying down, but this is not a rigid principle. Pregnant mums or those in discomfort may prefer to be treated standing or seated.

So what is the Craniosacral system and why is it so important?

The Craniosacral system describes, and consists of:

  1. The three layers of membranes that surround and protect the brain.
  2. The spinal cord and nerve roots emanating from this.
  3. The Cerebrospinal fluid.

The membranes that surround the brain, taper at the back of the skull to form a tube which passes through an opening at the base of the skull, the Foramen Magnum. This tube of membranes passes down through the spinal canal, behind the vertebral bodies, until it eventually affixes to the sacrum. The shape of this membranous tube or sac is a bit like a tadpole. The vital significance of this tube of membranes is that it contains and protects, not only the spinal cord, but also the Cerebrospinal Fluid, the “Essence of Life”.

It is not widely known, but is adequately proven, that the Craniosacral system has a pulse or rhythm, as tangible and detectable as the human heartbeat. In Craniosacral work we describe these rhythms as “Tides”. This seems to beautifully describe their ebb and flow nature, and also to acknowledge that their source is more universal in nature than solely from inside of ourselves. These tides can be accessed anywhere in the body, and a craniosacral therapist listens with their hands to feel the nature, strength, vitality of the tide.

Through the tides, the body’s Intelligence is spread to every cell of the body. The Craniosacral system is how both nervous and emotional energy and messages are distributed throughout the body, it transmits thought into action, it is justifiably described as the governing system of the body, for without its proper functioning everything is impaired.

What happens during a treatment session?

During a session, I listen to the clients body with my hands using a very light touch. Each bone, or pairs of bones, have an expected range and direction of movements imparted on them by the tides. Feeling this motion implies that the craniosacral system in this area is healthy, a lack of tidal movement implies that there is some impediment to motion and I will listen for clues as to what is happening. I will relate what I feel, to my knowledge of anatomy, physiology and embryology and also to what the client has related to me about their life story. The therapy is not only about relating to bony anatomy; every tissue whether connective, muscle or nerve has its own particular feel to it that I am able to distinguish through touch. As a therapist I relate to the health within a clients system and build on that, rather than focusing on disease. The most important part of the therapy is the attentive and deep listening to the clients system. In the listening to and acknowledgement of the body’s Intelligence, a treatment plan unfolds that the body implements.

What have I used Craniosacral Therapy to treat?

I have worked successfully with many babies, from as young as two weeks old. These young people have been brought to me for a variety of reasons; colic or colic type symptoms, restlessness, birthing trauma, feeding problems or just a feeling that they are unsettled.  Working over several sessions has resolved their issues and improved the family dynamic immeasurably.

I work a lot with adult musculoskeletal problems, both chronic and acute. So this could be someone with a longstanding back problem, or someone who has injured themselves. It is equally effective in treating cage fighters to those with tennis elbow or frozen shoulders.

Craniosacral Therapy is effective in the treatment of migraines, headaches, colitis and other bowel related conditions, it is also great for relieving stress and tension related conditions.

I also use it for treating unresolved trauma using somatic release techniques. These techniques acknowledge that unresolved traumatic energy can remain trapped in the body tissues, and can cause ongoing problems unless released.

Here are a few testimonials to my work:

"I needed to sort out my shoulder and my knee, not only to enable me to work but also I had a difficult sporting competition coming up. After 3 sessions, both problem areas had resolved and I won my competition. I have been fine since.” Matt from Taunton.

“We brought our baby son to see Simon. He seemed distressed a lot of the time, and we felt it had something to do with his difficult birth. We learnt to listen to our son, and after several sessions talking through aspects of his birth and with gentle craniosacral treatment, he was far more content in himself, and as a family we were able to move on.” Debbie from Bridgwater.

“I brought my newborn son to see Simon, but during the sessions I mentioned that I had a bad elbow and had been suffering with it for several months. Simon worked with my elbow during my son’s treatment, and it was only a few days after that I noticed that the pain had gone completely.” David from Taunton.
